2. Amazing Things Art Center feat. Keith Stockless

What an incredible vibe they have at the Amazing Things Art Center for their open mic. Dan Cloutier, the host of the open mic, puts his whole heart into it. I gathered it was a bigger evening than they expected, and Dan kept things moving and feeling friendly in the room, giving personal intros for each returning performer and engaging each new performer. The Amazing Things Arts Center is a big room and a professional venue, but it felt intimate just because of the casual and communal vibe.

I loved how much variety there was throughout the evening and as Dan said at the top of the open mic: "Anything goes." There was blues, a rap act, special performances of new songs for the new year and the best "mouth trombone" I have ever heard. Even with all of that variety and new folks I was happy to meet, there were familiar faces in the crowd-- performers who had also been at my first stop on the open mic tour. You see, what I am doing is not uncommon. I'm giving it a name and making a big to-do about it, but there are folks who do this naturally and continually, engaging in their community and sharing songs with one another. Friendship is key in all of this and being a part of these two open mics so far has lifted my spirit greatly. There are such wonderful people around us.

Gather 'round for Round 2!

The format of the night started with drawing names for the order of performers. Each performer played one song in the first round. There was a break for the feature set, which was performed by UK-student Keith Stockless this time. After the first round and the feature set, there was a break. If you needed to leave, you could without judgement, and if you wished to stay for the acoustic circle round, you could. Everyone gathered 'round in a circle and played their tunes. Most played newer material or songs they don't often play out. If anyone got a feel for the chords or structure, they would play along. It was such a comfortable environment to perform in.

All in all, the Amazing Things Arts Center open mic is an incredible community gathering and one I look forward to visiting again. I'll be playing a feature set there on February 25th!
